October.
We looked at a route which avoided Widdrington Road and the issue of crossing Lockhurst Lane.

Thanks for taking on board my comments. I agree that the alternative A444 crossing is a bit narrow on the north side, but widening the path shouldn't be impossible as the school won't miss ~1m of forest (geting the council to transfer the land to a different department may be more of an issue). This could then be part of a "Safe Routes to Schools" scheme.
Moving past any school (car, foot or bike) is a nightmare at closing time so I don't think this should rule it out.
